Bag Glove Guide – Why you shouldn't train on a heavy bag with your sparring gloves

Many beginner combat athletes make the mistake of using the same boxing gloves for heavy bag training that they use for sparring or general training. However, the hard, dense surface of the bag and the constant friction will destroy the soft foam layer and outer covering of fight gloves extremely quickly. Bag gloves (or bag mitts), specifically developed for this purpose, feature denser, more compact padding and a more abrasion-resistant outer layer, providing perfect protection for the metacarpal bones and joints during hard strikes.

The main benefits of bag gloves

  • Outstanding abrasion resistance: Reinforced stitching and a special outer covering withstand constant contact with the rough surface of the bag.
  • Denser, shock-absorbing foam layer: It does not flatten out even when striking hard surfaces, protecting your knuckles from bruising.
  • Preserving the lifespan of your fight gloves: By using separate bag gloves, your sparring gloves will retain their softness, shape, and hygiene.
  • Developing proper punching form: The thinner, more ergonomic design allows for better feel of the impact angle, which helps in refining proper fist formation and technique.

Bag Gloves vs. General Boxing Gloves

Feature Bag Gloves General Boxing Gloves / Sparring Gloves
Foam density Dense, harder, flatter profile foam Soft, thick, rounded foam layer (for partner protection)
Thumb design Often open or separate for better ventilation Attached tightly to the glove body for injury-free combat
Usage Heavy bag, focus mitts, wall pads only Partner drills, sparring, technical training

How to choose the right bag gloves?

1. Sizing (S, M, L, XL vs. Ounces)

Some bag gloves use traditional S, M, L, XL sizing, but there are also types specified in ounces (e.g., 8–10 oz). When choosing, consider the circumference of your hand and whether you use hand wraps underneath:

  • Size S: For children, teenagers, and smaller female hands
  • Size M: For average female and smaller male hands
  • Size L: For average male hand size
  • Size XL: For adults with larger hands

2. Materials (Leather vs. Synthetic Leather)

Genuine leather bag gloves are the most durable, handling regular daily bag work and high levels of sweat well. Premium synthetic leather (PU) options are a perfect choice for supplementary training and for beginners.

Care and maintenance tips

  1. Always use hand wraps: Wraps stabilize the wrist joint and absorb sweat, preventing the glove from becoming soaked and developing unpleasant odors.
  2. Immediate ventilation: After training, open the velcro straps fully and dry them in a well-ventilated, shaded area.
  3. Cleaning: Regularly wipe down the outer surface with a damp, disinfectant wipe.
