Boxing gloves buying guide – How to choose the perfect gloves?

Protecting your hands and wrists is the number one priority for every combat sports athlete. A quality boxing glove not only protects your own joints but also ensures the safety of your training partner during sparring.

What types of boxing gloves are there?

Depending on the intended use, boxing gloves can be categorized into three main types:

Training Glove

The most popular versatile type, suitable for partner drills, pad work, and light sparring.

Bag Glove

Designed specifically for heavy bag training and pad work, featuring denser foam padding.

Sparring Glove

Gloves with thicker, softer, and larger (14–16 oz) padding to protect your partner.

How to choose the right boxing glove size (oz / ounce)?

Boxing glove sizes are not indicated by S, M, or L, but by ounces (oz). 1 oz is approximately equal to 28.3 grams.

Size (Oz)	Recommended body weight / Area of use
6 – 8 oz	For children, juniors, and lighter-weight women (for training, bag work)
10 oz	For women and average-build men for technical training, bag work
12 oz	General training gloves for adults (partner drills, pad work)
14 – 16 oz	For practice sparring (combat) and for heavier athletes for maximum protection

Leather vs. Synthetic leather boxing gloves – Which one to choose?

1. Genuine leather boxing gloves

Premium-category gloves made of genuine cowhide are extremely durable, flexible, and offer better ventilation. This is the most long-lasting choice for advanced athletes and those training multiple times a week.

2. Synthetic leather (PU / Synthetic Leather) boxing gloves

A more cost-effective alternative, which is a perfect choice for beginners to master the basics of the sport.

Maintenance tips for a long lifespan

Always use hand wraps: they absorb sweat, prevent odors, and provide extra support for the wrist.
Immediate drying: after training, open the velcro strap and air them out in a shaded place — do not put them on a radiator or in direct sunlight.
Deodorizing: use glove deodorizer inserts or disinfectant spray.
