MMA Glove Guide – How to Choose the Perfect Gloves for Mixed Martial Arts?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) present a unique challenge for combat sports equipment. Since the sport combines stand-up striking techniques (boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing) with ground fighting and wrestling (BJJ, judo, grappling), MMA gloves must simultaneously provide protection for the metacarpal bones and complete freedom of movement for the fingers for gripping and submissions.

What Types of MMA Gloves Are Available?

Based on the intended use and padding thickness, MMA gloves are divided into three main types:

  • MMA Competition Gloves (4 oz): Compact, thinly padded, open-palm gloves used in amateur and professional bouts. They provide maximum mobility for grappling, but offer minimal shock absorption.
  • MMA Sparring / Training Gloves (7 oz): Gloves featuring a thicker, rounded foam layer and extra thumb protection. Specifically designed for hard gym standing and ground fighting sessions to protect your training partner and your hands from injury.
  • Grappling Gloves: Lightweight, highly flexible gloves focused on protecting the joints and the back of the hand during ground training, while not hindering grips.

MMA Gloves vs. Traditional Boxing Gloves

Feature MMA Gloves Traditional Boxing Gloves
Finger Design Open fingers and open palm for gripping Closed fist, attached thumb
Weight (oz) Usually 4 oz (competition) or 7 oz (sparring) Usually 10 oz – 16 oz
Function Striking, throwing, joint locking, grappling Exclusive striking and blocking technique

How to Choose the Right Size?

1. Sizing (Based on Hand Circumference)

MMA gloves are made in standard S, M, L, XL sizes. When choosing, consider whether you will be wearing MMA handwraps or glove liners underneath:

  • Size S: For smaller women's hands or younger athletes
  • Size M: For average women's and smaller men's hands
  • Size L: For average men's hand size
  • Size XL: For men with larger hands and heavier weight classes

2. Material (Leather vs. Synthetic Leather)

Genuine leather MMA gloves maintain their durability for a long time despite intensive use, friction on the mat (tatami), and sweat. Synthetic leather (PU) options offer an excellent price-to-value ratio for beginners and for 1-2 training sessions per week.

Care and Maintenance Tips

  1. Use thin handwraps: Handwraps stabilize the wrist joint and absorb sweat, extending the lifespan of the gloves.
  2. Dry after every workout: Since MMA gloves are open, they ventilate quickly, but never leave them in a damp gym bag!
  3. Cleaning: Regularly wipe them down with a damp, disinfectant wipe.
