Tatami Guide – Choosing safe and professional combat sports flooring

Whether you are setting up a professional combat sports gym or creating a home practice area, tatami (gym mats / puzzle tatami) is one of the most important investments. Quality tatami not only provides non-slip traction for striking actions but also absorbs the impact energy from throws and falls, protecting athletes' spines, joints, and heads from serious injuries.

Which types of tatami can you choose from?

Different combat sports disciplines require flooring of varying thickness and density:

Thickness	Material & Surface	Key features	Recommended use
2 cm - 2.5 cm Puzzle Tatami	High-density EVA foam, rice-straw pattern surface.	Lightweight, quick to assemble and disassemble, provides excellent grip without shifting.	Karate, Taekwondo, Kick-boxing, Boxing, and general striking training.
4 cm Puzzle Tatami	High-density, multi-layer EVA foam.	Maximum shock absorption and flexibility for absorbing high-impact throws.	Judo, BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), Grappling, MMA, and acrobatic training.
Traditional Judo Tatami	Pressed agglomerated foam core, vinyl (PVC) rice-straw coating, anti-slip bottom.	Extremely heavy, shift-proof, specifically for high-traffic dojos.	Official Judo and BJJ competitions, fixed gym flooring.

Main advantages of quality puzzle tatami

Reversible design: Both sides of the tiles are different colors (e.g., red/blue or black/gray), making it easy to mark the boundaries of the fighting area and safety zones.
Precise puzzle interlocking: Laser-cut or high-precision joints fit tightly together, preventing the tiles from sliding apart and toes from getting caught.
Hygienic and easy to clean: The closed-cell EVA foam does not absorb sweat or water, preventing mold growth and allowing for quick disinfection.

Care and cleaning guide

Daily cleaning: After training, sweep the surface and mop it with a neutral pH disinfectant solution.
Avoid harsh chemicals: Do not use strong acids, chlorine, or abrasive agents, as these can damage the foam surface and fade the colors.
Footwear: Use the tatami only barefoot, in socks, or with soft-soled indoor tatami shoes to avoid mechanical damage to the foam.
