Groin Guard and Supporter Guide – Essential Lower Body Protection for Combat Athletes

Due to the dynamics of combat sports, accidental low blows and kicks are an unavoidable part of training and matches. Wearing a high-quality groin guard (or athletic supporter) is a fundamental safety requirement for every male athlete – whether it is boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, MMA, or any other preparation related to contact sports. The purpose of the groin guard is to disperse the force of an unwanted impact onto the surrounding hard bone structure (the pubic bone), protecting the sensitive groin organs.

Which types of groin guards can you choose from?

Based on comfort, range of motion, and the nature of the sport, several types of lower body protectors are available:

Classic strap supporter (with cotton/elastic strap): The most common form, where the plastic or gel-rimmed cup is placed in a flexible, Velcro, or elastic support pouch. It is easy to put on and take off, and because the cup is removable, it can be washed hygienically.
Compression shorts with integrated cup: A pair of short compression pants (base layer) with a built-in pocket in the front for the protective cup. This is the best choice for ground fighting (MMA, BJJ, grappling) because it does not shift and does not chafe the skin.
Metal cup / Pro Muay Thai supporter: An extremely durable, traditional steel-cup protector that must be tied with laces. It provides the most effective protection against hard Thai boxing kicks.
Thickly padded pro-boxing groin protector: A leather or synthetic leather protector that can be pulled up high, equipped with a thick layer of foam, which protects the hips and the area below the navel in addition to the groin.

Comparison of groin guard types

Type	Protection against shifting	Protection level	Recommended sport
Cotton strap supporter	Good (with proper sizing)	Medium / High	Boxing, Kickboxing, Karate, Taekwondo
Compression shorts style	Outstanding (does not shift at all)	High	MMA, Grappling, BJJ, Ground fighting
Metal cup (Thai) supporter	Maximum (lace-up fastening)	Extremely high	Muay Thai, K-1, hard sparring

How to choose the right size?

Groin guard sizing is generally based on waist circumference and cup size. A protector that is too large may slip down and chafe the inner thigh, while one that is too small may feel constricting and not provide full coverage:

Junior / XS–S size: For children and youth up to approx. 10–14 years old.
M size: For average, slimmer-built men (approx. 75–85 cm waist circumference).
L size: For adults with a normal or athletic build (approx. 85–95 cm waist circumference).

Cleaning and hygiene

Removing the cup: Always remove the plastic or metal cup from the support pouch before washing!
Washing: Wash the textile support strap or shorts on a gentle cycle at 30–40 °C after every training session.
Disinfecting the cup: Wipe the plastic/metal cup with lukewarm water and a disinfectant wipe.
