Headgear Guide – Maximum skull and facial protection in combat sports

Punches and kicks to the head subject the brain, facial bones, ears, and scalp to regular impact. A high-quality combat sports headgear (boxing headgear) is an essential piece of equipment for safe training and sparring. Its primary function is to absorb and dissipate impact energy, preventing facial bone and nose injuries, skin lacerations, and bruising caused by strikes to the ears.

What types of headgear are available?

Based on the level of protection and the nature of use, you can choose from the following main headgear categories:

  • Open-face / Competition headgear: Provides an open face area for maximum peripheral vision. This type is required for official amateur boxing, kickboxing, or taekwondo competitions (e.g., with WAKO certification).
  • Cheek-protector headgear: Protects the cheekbones, facial skin, and zygomatic bones with an extra layer of padding. The most popular choice for gym sparring in Muay Thai, kickboxing, and boxing.
  • Chin-protector headgear: In addition to the cheekbones, it supports and protects the jaw from below, reducing the risk of concussions caused by strikes to the chin.
  • Full-face / Cage headgear: Provides full coverage for the entire face. Highly recommended for children, beginners, hard-contact sports, or returning to training after facial/nose injuries.

Comparison of headgear types

Type Field of view / Visibility Protection level Recommended use
Open-face competition headgear Maximum (full peripheral vision) Medium (skull and ears) Official matches, competitions (WAKO, AIBA)
Cheek / Chin protector Good (slightly narrower downwards) High (skull, cheekbones, chin) Regular gym sparring
Full-face / Cage headgear More limited Outstanding (full facial protection) Krav Maga, children's training, post-injury training

How to choose the right size?

The most important feature of a good headgear is that it does not shift upon impact, as a rotating headgear can obstruct your vision. Sizing is based on head circumference (measured along the forehead, above the ears):

  • Size S: 52–55 cm (Child / Junior or smaller female head size)
  • Size M: 55–58 cm (Average female and smaller male head size)
  • Size L: 58–61 cm (Average male head size)
  • Size XL: Over 61 cm (For larger head circumferences)

Care and hygiene

  1. Drying after every training: Since the inner lining of the headgear absorbs a lot of sweat, open the velcro straps immediately after training and let it dry in a well-ventilated, shaded place!
  2. Cleaning: You can keep the synthetic leather or leather surface and the inner lining hygienic by wiping them down with a damp, antibacterial wipe. Do not put it in the washing machine!
