Puzzle Tatami Guide – The Most Practical Combat Sport and Fitness Flooring

The modular puzzle tatami (interlocking foam mat) has revolutionized the flooring of martial arts gyms and training rooms. With their serrated edges and typically 1x1 meter dimensions, these tiles allow you to create a combat area of any size and shape in seconds, without the need for glue or complicated installation. The high-density EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) foam material protects joints from impacts while providing a thermal and acoustic insulation layer between the floor and athletes.

What Thickness of Puzzle Tatami Should You Choose?

Choosing the right thickness depends on the type of martial sport practiced and the intensity of throws:

Thickness	Hardness / Density	Key Features	Recommended Use
2 cm Thick Tatami	Firmer, hard EVA core	Provides stable footing without sinking, prevents ankle injuries during movement.	Karate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Boxing, Cardio, and Fitness training.
2.5 cm Thick Tatami	Medium-firm / Universal	Optimal balance between striking stability and cushioning for lower throws.	General martial arts gyms, combined striking and ground fighting training, MMA striking.
4 cm Thick Tatami	Softer, high shock absorption	Maximum absorption capacity to handle high-force throws and falls from a height.	Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Grappling, Wrestling, Acrobatics.

Key Benefits of Puzzle Tatamis

Reversible Color Scheme: The two sides of the tiles feature different colors (e.g., red/blue or black/red), making it easy to create competition mats, safety zones, or custom patterns by simply flipping the mats.
Laser-Precise Interlocking Edges and Borders: Precisely fitting puzzle teeth prevent the tiles from shifting apart, while removable border strips provide a straight finish along walls.
Anti-Slip Surface Pattern: The rice-straw or tatami-weave texture provides perfect grip for barefoot training without chafing the soles of the feet or skin during ground fighting.
Closed-Cell, Waterproof Structure: Does not absorb sweat or moisture, preventing unpleasant odors and the buildup of bacteria.

Cleaning and Maintenance Tips

Regular Cleaning: After sweeping or vacuuming, wipe down the surface with a neutral pH disinfectant damp mop!
Protect Against Sharp Objects: Do not wear street shoes, high heels, or use sharp-edged training equipment on the tatami, as these can damage the EVA foam surface!
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged, intense sunlight can cause the EVA foam to expand or fade, so use window shading near windows!
