Kick-Light shorts guide – The perfect shorts for tatami combat

Kick-Light is one of the most fast-paced and spectacular tatami disciplines in kickboxing. Since, unlike Point Fighting or Light-Contact, this rule set allows for kicks to both the inner and outer thigh, competitors wear special Kick-Light shorts instead of long pants. Good Kick-Light shorts do not stick to the thigh, are breathable, and provide complete freedom for lightning-fast footwork and acrobatic kicks.

How do Kick-Light shorts differ from Muay Thai shorts?

Although both types are short-cut, Kick-Light shorts are specifically designed for the needs of tatami combat:

Lighter technical materials: Kick-Light shorts are often made of ultra-light microfiber or technical polyester, whereas Thai boxing shorts are traditionally made of thicker satin.
More comfortable, flexible waistband: The elastic waistband is stable but not as stiff or wide as the classic 8-panel Muay Thai waistband, providing a more comfortable fit during continuous fighting.
Standard cut: Complies with the competition regulations of WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organizations) and other international federations.

Key benefits of Kick-Light shorts

Feature	Advantage during combat
Deep side slits	Prevents the pant legs from catching on the thigh during high head kicks or leg strikes.
Moisture-wicking fabric	Dries quickly, does not become heavy from sweat, and prevents skin chafing during intense rounds.
Flexible crotch gusset	Ensures wide stances and sudden changes of direction without the seams tearing.

How to choose the right size?

Kick-Light shorts sizing (XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL) is based on waist circumference and body height:

Child / Junior sizes (XS–S): For younger athletes who are just getting to know the tatami disciplines.
Adult sizes (M–XXL): For a precise fit, choose your usual clothing size. The internal drawstring and elastic waist ensure that the shorts do not shift in the heat of the fight.

Care and washing instructions

Gentle wash: To protect the technical fabric and printed patterns, always wash the shorts inside out at 30°C!
Avoid the tumble dryer: Synthetic technical materials dry in minutes at room temperature. The high heat of a tumble dryer can damage the elastic fibers!
